The Martian by Andy Weir

“I’ll spend the rest of the evening enjoying a potato. And by “enjoying” I mean “hating so much I want to kill people.”

Title: The Martian
Author: Andy Weir
Why you should read this book: science, space, POTATOES!

Mark Watney was on Mars for a mission with his crew when a sand storm surprises them leaving him wounded and alone on the planet. He doesn’t have a way to tell Earth that he is alive and the mission only had a numbered quantity of food so the chances of surviving aren’t very high. Mark has to use all his skills because he isn’t going to give up and let Mars win!

As you can see from the picture of this review I read this book in Italian because I found it very cheap in a supermarket and I couldn’t say no to a bargain. I bought it back in august and just put it in my library without starting it right away: I knew there was going to be a movie based on it but I didn’t know when so I thought I had time. I couldn’t be more wrong! Last Thursday my sister asked me if I wanted to go to the movies, I asked her what movie she wanted to watch and she said “The Martian”. I couldn’t believe that I allowed the time to pass so quickly! I didn’t want to watch the movie before reading the book so I challenged myself to start it and finish it before Saturday night. I have never finished a book in so little time. Well, I did it! I finished it Saturday before lunch and, guess what? We couldn’t go to the movies! We are going this Friday! I can’t wait to start comparing the differences and make a long summary to whoever is going to go with me! I’m not sorry!

What to say about this book. It is fun, smart and page after page you find yourself rooting for Mark and his survival. You know he can do it, you have no doubt he will do his best to win against everything this planet is throwing at him and believe me, there will be a lot of things thrown at him, not only by Mars!

“He’s stuck out there. He thinks he’s totally alone and that we all gave up on him. What kind of effect does that have on a man’s psychology?” He turned back to Venkat. “I wonder what he’s thinking right now.”

LOG ENTRY: SOL 61 How come Aquaman can control whales? They’re mammals! Makes no sense.”

We don’t get to know Mark’s background, we only read his log entries and what’s going on in his mind day after day. His log entries are almost always about problem-solving so we get to know how he thinks and how he faces the difficulties of his situation. Mark is an ingenious and a hilarious man, I don’t know how much I’ve laughed reading his entries, they were brilliant: Mark is a clever man and I love him (you will, too, when you’ll read this book).

“WATNEY: Look! A pair of boobs! -> (.Y.).”

All those days alone on Mars, repairing everything that broke, inventing new ways to survive and discovering “The marvelous 70’s” through disco music and tv shows thanks to Commander Lewis’s obsession. At least he had something to watch, listen and read or else he would’ve gotten mad in a week!

When I read about the movie and looked up who was going to play the characters I was surprised to see a lot of famous people for the Ares 3’s crew. In the book they don’t appear much, we don’t get to know them either, just their roles on the mission and a little bit about their personal lives. I understood that was because the book was based on Mark’s entries, his day after day life on Mars and on NASA’s mission to bring him home.

So many things I want to quote, I could quote the entire book! I won’t so I will finish this short review with one of the most important lines Mark wrote in one of his entries:

“Duct tape works anywhere. Duct tape is magic and should be worshiped.”

I read they left the “The Lord of the Rings” reference in the movie and that there is Sean Bean in the room when they say it. They left out a lot of things but kept that one. I can’t wait to watch it!

Do I recommend it? Yes, if you like space you will love it!
